30 Day SEO: Day 2 How to optimise the meta page title tag.

It can make the quickest difference to search engine position!

On Day 1 we looked at how to assess where your website is currently placed in the search engines and the importance of recording the information so you know how things are improving.

So if you’ve done the keyword position research and recorded the results, it is time to move on and look at optimising your first page, and for this Lesson we’re going to focus on the meta title, as this is fairly easy to do and can make a big difference quickly.

Why this SEO tag is so important?

Keywords and phrases within the meta page title tag is used by the search engines when deciding where to place your website pages on the search results page.

By crafting the the meta title tag that contains the right keyword phrase for your page, you’ll have the best chance of helping the page achieve a good position.

So what are the meta page titles?

These are not the titles within the body of the page, but exist in the source code of the website and are usually edited using your website’s content management system (CMS).

So for example the meta title of this page is  ”30 Day SEO Training Course – Day 2″, as I have enter that in the CMS as below.

30 Days to a Better Search Engine Position – Day 2 — 4 Comments

  1. Just Joined the 30 day course and thank you for that.
    I also use WordPress.
    I notice there are H1 H2 H3 H4 tags, H1 is the Title ?
    H2 ? & H3
My question is how to construct a H1 Title using a keyword phrase but how close to the Title does the content need to be ?
If there are 10 pages of results for a “searched phrase” how does my “phrase” get noticed by the bots/spiders?
Large Blue Squares is the title, so can the content be on blue circles ? red cylinders? 10 uses for blue squares?

I had a Google Adwords account but it stopped working and the costs kept going up, so I’m trying a new tactic.
    Thanks, Brad

    • Hi Brad,
I hope to include the first question in the topic above (as discussed in your other point). I’ve found there is no easy way to getting your page noticed over other’s, other than keeping on optimizing it until it improves.
      Cheers
      David

  2. Hi,
My site is in WordPress so I had to figure out how to do this in my theme. I ran into some advice on WordPress not to bother as Metatags are no longer very relevant. Any views?
In addition I wondered whether you have to put in the [exact phrase] in my case ‘working mums’ or whether it would be just as good to put in ‘web community for working mums’ which seems to make more sense for the reader. I would be grateful for a response.

    • Hi Inge,

Thanks for the comment and sorry about the delay in getting back.

I have found that actually meta tags can be very effective especially if they are done well. It is true that Google does not take much notice of the keyword tag these days, but the title tag and description tag are still very important.

In the title tag you can enter a keyword rich phrase, which Google may use when deciding to rank the page. The description tag, if written well can appear on the Google search results page. So it needs to be written a bit like an ad, as it is not about keywords and much more about getting people to click on your link in Google.

Regarding the phrases, I would be inclined to put both in if possible and also have variations on the phrase as this all helps with different keywords used. The ideal way is to try and focus each page on a particular keyword phrase, but obviously this is not always possible.

There will be more about this coming in the 30 Day Guide and I have also written an eBook on Meta Tags in the Premium Area.

I hope this helps a bit.
