30 Day SEO Day 1 How is your site currently doing.
How to assess where your website is currently placed
Before you start optimising your website it makes good sense to do quick assessment of where it is currrently placed in the search engines so you’ll have a good idea of how things improve going forward.
Keep things very simple
People imagine this is a complicted and difficult thing to do, requiring special SEO tools or techniques, but in my view it is not the case.
Make a quick list of phrases
First thing to do is make a quick list of the keyword phrases you think your website is found for and those you’d like it to be found for.
You should have an idea of what these are
If you’re the business owner or marketing manager you should have a good idea of what these are, based on the products or services you sell.
Now search for them in the search engine
Next is the fun bit. With your favorite search engine open, start searching on these phrases and make a note against where you’ve written the phrase down the position in the search engine you found for that phrase.
If you can’t find any position for a particular phrase (and this is not unusual), don’t worry, just note that down as well.
Keep looking on the results pages
It is worth going through a number of search result pages on the search engine, when doing this research. The reason for this is if you’re currently placed on page 5, for a given phrase it is worth knowing that especially if it is an important phrase.
Many times I have worked with website’s, where we’ve started out on page 5 or lower, optimised the page and within a couple of weeks it was on page 1.

Hi David
After following you for sometime on Twitter, I finally decided to take the plunge and sign up for your 30 Day SEO Challenge, and I haven’t looked back since! Really enjoying my SEO training, and it’s delivered in an easy to follow format. Setting tasks is also one of my best ways to learn and really keeps me focussed.
Thank you.
Hi Marci,
Many thanks for the great feedback. It’s good to know that people are finding the SEO training useful, and are enjoying it as well! Also nice to know the tasks are keeping you moving forward. More lessons are being added soon.
Good luck with optimising your website!
David
Well finally I signed up – been following you on Twitter for ages and I knew I had to do it – SEO and SEM are key areas for my clients and I need to get a better grip than I have. Starting with your 30 day course tomorrow! wish me luck.
Hi Paula,
Really pleased that you have signed up and I hope the course is going well. Just to let you know I’m adding more of the 30 day lessons, next week.
Regards,
David
After months of seeing these lessons appearing on Twitter, I’ve decided that 2012 is the time to act. I was contemplating going on an SEO course costing £££s but instead I decided to take the plunge and sign up for this. As a micro business handmaking products for sale to the general public, we have to watch the costs and as I’ve already designed and built a website that has been active for our business for 4 years, I thought why not learn better SEO methods? Especially if they’re in plain English!
I’m one of the few who actually finds SEO quite exciting (sad, I know!) and can’t wait to get started.
Thank you, David, for getting my backside in gear.
Kind regards
Helen
Hi Helen,
This is good to hear and it is good to know someone else finds SEO exciting! Anyway good luck with optimising your site and keep us posted on how you get on.
With best regards
David
Hi David,
What if you can’t find yourself for your main keyword at all! I want to follow your 30 day programme but cannot find my site for wooden toys, believe it or not we sell wooden toys!
Thanks
Simon
Hi Simon,
Thanks for your comment.
I did have a quick look at your site and think it’s a great looking website. You also seem to have keyword rich pages and plenty of them. It is difficult to assess why the site is not coming higher, without looking in detail, and could very well be a combination of factors. One thing I did notice was that some of the meta titles and description tags, seem to be auto generated from the site content. In my experience meta tags work better when done manually using original content.
Hope this helps a bit.
Regards
David
Wow you give a lot of SEO for free, thanks.
No problem, pleased you are finding it useful.
That is very valuable advice. Thank you very much.
The sign of a good SEO company is one who pays particular attention to getting quality traffic to your site that will increase sales, as well as getting good inbound links to your site.
Yes, I agree with all those points, but it is also important that the client has some understanding of search engine optimisation, as then he or she will have a better understanding of what the SEO consultant is doing, and can get more involved in the whole process.
This is one of the reasons why I started the 30 Day SEO course so people can get a better understanding of the whole subject, without getting too technical. Even if they complete the course they may still go on and use the services of an SEO company.
Very help full thank you
