Sooner or later you’re going to need more keyword phrases than you can get from brainstorming

The reason for this is simple. Obviously you’re going to have some idea of keyword phrases yourself. And you can also ask your customers and colleagues. But sooner or later, especially if you are optimising a lot of pages, you’ll going to need more phrases, and more keyword ideas than you can simply get from brainstorming. You’re going to need a keyword research tool and one of the best I’ve found is made by none other than Google.

Google keyword tool has several things going for it

There are a few things the Google keyword tool has going for it. The first is that it is free, which is always a good start. The second is it is fairly easy to use and the third is that it always produces plenty of keyword options.

Designed more for AdWords users than SEO

Obviously it can’t all be all good and the Google keyword tool has a couple of disadvantages as well. Not surprisingly it is not really designed for organic SEO, but for people looking for more keywords to put in their AdWords campaigns. Having said this you do get some useful information about keywords such as volume and competition.

Takes a little more time to filter and sort keywords

The other disadvantage is it is quite basic. There is little help with filtering keywords or weeding out the ones of no value. All this you need to do manually, which takes more time, but it does give you a chance to go through them and find the best.

Can be very quick to use once you get used to it

However once you get used to it, it can become a very quick keyword research tool and then is ideal when you have quite a few pages to do. I’ve found if I have the tool running on a duel screen, I can choose an initial phrase for the page, drop than into the keyword tool, and have a short list of phrases within about a minute, all ready to incorporate into the page.

Go through using it step by step

Below I’m going to take you through using the tool, step by step to research keywords for a page on my site. All you need to do is open the keyword tool yourself and follow the steps and in no time you’ll have your own keyword list.
