Start with your domain

First visit www.google.com/analytics. Click on “Sign up now”, (you may be able to sign in way your Google account if you have one, or you will need to create one there and then.

The next thing to do is click on “Add Website Profile”, link and once you are on the “Create New Website Profile” page, click the option to “Add a Profile for a new domain”.

Enter your web address (URL), in the box below, making sure it is correct and includes the www. Once this is done click the “Finish” button.

Tracking code

This takes you to the Tracking Code page. In simple terms there is a box in the lower half of the page and you need to copy this code and place it in the source code of every page on your website.
You will need access to be able to edit your web pages to do this and if you don’t have this access as the person who built the website. The code should near the end of the page, just before the final </body> tag.
Once this is done, after a few days you should see the visitor data appearing in the Google Analytics reporting.

    Dave,
    Good post… it is amazing how many websites are not tracking information about visitor traffic, and even larger firms that are not measuring what is happening to their websites. Obviously the more intel we can collect about visitors and search trends the better so that page content can be updated.
