Where Am I in the Search EnginesWell now you can with an SEO tool from Ranks.nl

This is really a very simple tool but it offers a useful function. What it does is bring together all the results from a given keyword phrase into one page so you can easily see where your website is positioned in each search engine. You can also use it for competitor research.

How does it work?

It’s very simple. First visit www.ranks.nl/tools/compare.html and enter your choice of the 5 search engines.

Then choose the layout and enter your keyword phrase and press submit. The page that comes up will show a small window of results for each search engine.

In the screenshot above (click to see a more detailed version) I have done a comparison for the phrase “adwords keyword tools” as I know my website has quite good position for this keyword in Google but am interested in how it is doing in the other search engines.

Using the keyword tool I can quickly find out where the site is for the phrase in my chosen search engines and compare directly between them.

Record the results

Also if I record the results against the date in a simple SEO record spreadsheet, I can see how things have moved when I run the tool again in the future.

Where is my website in the search engines? — 13 Comments

  1. Great article! I tried the tool as I am still to find a quick way to check keyword ranking. I use SEO Profiler and I find it good for a lot of things but the keyword ranking doesn’t give current status as it doesn’t update regularly enough and when clients want weekly updates it’s not adequate.

Unfortunately though I’ve had the same problem with the tool you suggested, it’s not showing Google results and as other search engines only make up 1% of my clients search engine traffic it’s hardly worth knowing.

I do really like your blog though you do a great job. We’re connected on Linkedin & Twitter & I often come to read your posts as they appear in my Linkedin feed.

    • Hi Alex,
Many thanks for the great feedback. It’s always good to know when people are finding the information useful.

No, I think the problem is Google may have blocked access for the tool, so obviously it is of much less value. I have added a note to this post to let people know.

      All the best,
      David

  2. Thank you for this useful tool. I will definitely be checking our website with this tool on a regular basis.

However, for some strange reason, I am not able to get results for Google. I am experiencing a blank list.

    Please advise, many thanks!

  3. I have spent a whole of last week changing my content pages and changing keywords and SEO with a massive help on reading advice and tips from this Really Simply SEO website. I came up on page 6 on Google last week so I must be doing something right.

Just had a go on the ranks – I’m on page 3 on Bing and page 9 on Google! I understand I’m new – website launched last November, it may take time but I’m getting there.

If it wasn’t for this website I probably be on page 50-100!

    • Hi Karen,

Many thanks for the feed back on your success with SEO. I’m really pleased it’s going so well and that ReallySimpleSEO’s Training Courses and Guides are helping. Just to let you know we’re adding new content all the time and the main publishing date is every Monday morning GMT.

  4. John,
Yes, you’ve made some very good points. There are limitations on this tool and it is not so good with Chrome. It does work quite well when you’re testing out keyword phrase you know you’re doing quite well for, and just want to see how the’re doing in the other engines. I just thought the tool was good because it shows the information in one screen.

  5. It’s a great idea but I don’t think it’s much quicker than doing it manually – unless you’re number one. It also doesn’t seem to have a Google UK version which is not helpful. I think they’ll be a better version of this out there or along soon. Didn’t seem to work well with Google Chrome as the scroll bars along the bottom were hidden by text.

    • Agree with you here John, all the site is doing is firing a query across each site and loading the results in an ugly and cumbersome way the sites aren’t meant to deal with. Would be easier to just load each search engine in a different tab and copy and paste each query in the engines.

Good advice on keeping a record on spreadsheets though.
