I removed mine several months ago and with a few precautions have had no problems

I use my computer all day as part of my job and need it to run fairly quickly to do what I need with it. So I was a bit perplexed a few months back when it seemed to be running so slowly, even though the anti virus checker ran every day.

Was anti virus slowing my computer down?

Mind you the anti virus software never seemed to find any problems, but with all its add-ons to monitor links, searches and so on it seemed to me that it was causing me more time lost than any virus (not that I’ve had any problems with them anyway).

Six months so far without it

So I decided to take the whole thing off and leave it off. That was six months ago. To this day I’ve not had any problems with computer viruses and my computer seems to run faster than it every did before.

So how can this be? We hear all the time how viruses are such a threat to a computer and it should not even be turned on if the anti virus is not running. Why is my computer even working at all?

Take precautions

I have taken a few simple precautions, that I’ve listed below, but all of these make sense anyway. I’m certainly not recommending anyone removes their anti virus program, but it has been an interesting experiment and at the moment I’m not planning to reinstall it.

These are the precautions I’ve taken:

• I only use Google Chrome or Firefox browsers (Internet Explorer may be fine but I just prefer these two)
• I use the Google apps for my email, which seems to have very strong virus protection built in
• I regularly replace my broadband router with the latest and best and make sure it is set up properly
• I run the Windows defrag every day
• I’m quite careful about the websites that I visit
