It’s the Clickable text or Hyperlinks, but there’s more too it than that.
Those links in your text can make all the difference with the search engines.
I recently wrote a quick review of Google’s “Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide and since the Guide talks about “anchor text”, I’ve had quite a few people asked exactly what it is.
Anchor text is text on a website that is hyperlinked to another web page or site. Why is it called anchor text and not just a link? Well a link can be anything: text, images, videos, even the whole page, anchor text is just about words and phrases and that’s why it is so important.
The main reason for this is that when people read things on the web they do it in a different way than if they were reading a magazine, newspaper or book.
People read differently on the web
They scan more, notice headings more and often don’t read right to the end. In essence they are looking for the point of the page without having to invest too much time in it. This is where anchor text comes in. You can highlight the main points and send your visitors to find out more if they wish.
Search engines will notice
Search engines know this too. They scan for anchor text and if they find it in a well written page, with the anchor text pointing to further helpful information, they take note and score the page accordingly.
