Why is this important?
This is important because if search engines don’t know about you website pages, they won’t be able to disply them when people are looking for your products or services.
How to setup an xml sitemap file?
It is really very easy but you do need ftp access to your website to install the file in the root folder, so this bit may need to be done by your website designer or developer, if you are unable to do this yourself. You can easily create the xml sitemap file though (see below).
Online sitemap generators to help
There are a number of online tools that will look at your website and automatically generate an xml sitemap file for you. One of easiest of these I’ve found to use is called XML Sitemaps.
To setup your own xml sitemap first open your web browser and visit: http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ On the page you’ll see a box below the heading “Starting URL”. Enter your website address in this box.
Setup your own xml Sitemap file
You don’t need to worry about any of the settings just click the “Start” button and wait while xml Sitemaps creates the sitemap.
When it’s finished you’ll get a page with some links on it. Click on the first link marked “Download un-compressed XML Sitemap”.
Place in the root folder
This is the file you need to place in the root folder of your website using ftp, or send it to your website develop to do.
