Are your websites backlinks going to cause you problems with Google?
There is a quick way to check out the inbound links to your website
Up to now website owner’s have focused on developing inbound links
For many years now website owner’s have focused on developing inbound links from other websites. The reason for this is simple. Google has always taken note of website backlinks as a ranking factor.
Recent Penguin Update has changed everything
But things at Google are changing. Since the Panda, and more recent Penguin updates, Google has been looking very closely at what sites are linking to you, the quality of those sites and whether any of those inbound links have been artificially created.
Google may not like your site if it has poor quality backlinks
This has created even more of a challenge for website owner’s. As well as trying to develop good quality links from other relevant sites, they also have to review the quality of their existing backlinks, as there is now a concern that Google may penalise sites with low quality inbound links.
How to go about checking your website’s backlinks
So how do you go about checking the quality of backlinks going to your site? There are quite a few ways to do this, such as looking in Google Analytics, Webmaster Tools etc. Or you can use a specific SEO management tool like SheerSEO, but what would be ideal is a very simple tool that you can use to quickly check these.
Simple free tool to do the job
One tool I’ve found that does this very well is called Analyze Backlinks from seotrackr.com. And it is a very simple tool to use. Just enter your domain name in the box at the top, click “Begin” and you’re good to go. I found that choosing “Yes” to “Find Anchor Text…” is worthwhile as it give you more information.
Will display a list of backlinks
Once you’ve run it for your site, the tool will display a list of all the backlinks it can find, together with the anchor text, total and outbound links.
Now comes the difficult bit
Your next job is to wade through these result and identify which are useful to you and which are not. You also need to check for any that may even be harming your site.

I found your recommended free tool very useful. However, it doesn’t show the anchor text for the inbound link.
Hi Melisa,
Thanks for your comment. There may have been an issues with it, but I tried it again today and it does seem to show the anchor text as long as you click the “Yes” box to Find Anchor text…
Great heads-up on the tool “Analyze Backlinks.” I’ll wear that one out!
