This is a question I’m often asked. It is true that Google have stated they no longer take any notice of the meta keyword tag on a web page. This is not to say you shouldn’t complete them, because Yahoo and Bing and many other search engine may still.

Google do take notice of the meta site title and description tags on your pages though, so completing these is still important, and in my experience can be one of the easiest ways to move a site up the rankings.

Matt Cutts of Google has written a very helpful page on their support site, outlining in some detail how to write the title and description tags.
