Struggling to get your site high in Google? Sometimes it can be better to focus on just one keyword phrase.
Often your site will naturally come in higher for some phrases over others.
You know the keywords phrases you want to come high for, but which are going to be the natural winners?
Website owners generally have a fair idea of the keyword phrases they’d like their website to come high in Google for. They usually have a list of around 10 or so phrases, based on the products or services they sell.
Unlikely any chosen keyword phrase will have a high position in Google.
The problem is unless you’re very lucky, or have invested a lot of time or money in optimising the website, it is unlikely that any of your chosen keywords is going to have a very high position in the search engines.
The is a common problem and usually provokes the question: “where do I start?” The answer is you need to start somewhere, and a good place might be to focus on just one keyword phrase that will have the best chance of a high search engine placement. Then you can build things from there.
Start with the list of keyword phrases you’d like to come top for.
First thing to do is start with your keyword list. If you don’t yet have one, there is a simple guide in Day 1 of my 30 Day SEO Challenge.
The next things to do is identify which of the phrases, has the best chance of getting a good search engine ranking. To do this you need to do a little research on where the site is placed currently for each of the keyword phrases.
The obviously way to do this is to enter the phrase into say Google (make sure you’re logged out of your Google account otherwise this can affect the results) and then try and then go through the results until your find your site.
SEO position tools can really speed up the job.
This can be very time consuming, especially if your site is not currently highly place in the search engines. Luckily there are a few tools that can help you with this. Currently I use one called Google Position Check, which allow a simple and quick way to check your websites position in Google for any keyword phrase.
So the first thing to do is work through all your chosen phrases using the above tool. Your aim is to identify the phrase that comes the highest in Google, using the keyword tool.
Start optimising your site, focusing on the best phrase.
Once you know what this phrase is, the next stage is to start optimising your website to focus on the phrase. Just by focusing on one phrase to start with, can achieve a reasonable search engine position for that keyword phrase as well as encouraging you with the other phrases going forward.
