One of the biggest challenges when optimising your website is choosing the best keyword phrases. Google offers a useful free keyword research tool to help with keyword research, which can be a great help and comes up with lots of keyword ideas, but it still doesn’t tell you which would work for you.

Something I’ve found to work quite well for this in the past is to run a small campaign in Google AdWords, to help identify the keyword phrases with the best potential.

Trying this out may not be as difficult as you might think. First research a starter keyword list. Then visit Google AdWords and set up a simple basic campaign using your keyword list. I’ve written a simple Starter Guide for AdWords if you need help.

Run the campaign on a low daily setting (I usually set it at 1 or 2 pounds a day), and keep a close eye on things. After a few days, you should have some useful information on the keywords. Things to look for are keywords that are showing clicks and a high click through rate (CTR). These are the phrases to try on your web pages.
