First thing is to learn as much as you can about SEO. Being aware of keyword phrases that relate to your business and even a very basic idea of the processes involved can really help in choosing the right person to work with.
Try and speak with the people who will be doing the work. If your only contact is someone in sales or customer service, how are you ever going to know how good their people are? Also don’t just believe what they are telling you. Test out some of the sites they’ve done using the free online keyword tools and see if they are as good as you’re being told.
Be careful about having to sign a contract. If they are so good, why do they need a contract? SEO should be an ongoing relationship, where the client is happy to share knowledge about keywords etc and the consultant is not afraid to ask for information if needed.
