Use Google Analytics
First question – do you have Google Analytics running on your website?
Most people do nowadays, mainly because it’s free, easy to use and offers some valuable reports about your visitors.
Get it installed – it’s going to help
If you don’t get it installed now, as it’s the best way to keep an eye of what your website visitors are doing. If you don’t have it installed here’s a quick guide:
First visit www.google.com/analytics. Click on “Sign up now”, (you may be able to sign in way your Google account if you have one, or you will need to create one there and then.
The next thing to do is click on “Add Website Profile”, link and once you are on the “Create New Website Profile” page, click the option to “Add a Profile for a new domain”.
Enter your web address (URL), in the box below, making sure it is correct and includes the www. Once this is done click the “Finish” button.
This takes you to the Tracking Code page. In simple terms there is a box in the lower half of the page and you need to copy this code and place it in the source code of every page on your website.
You will need access to be able to edit your web pages to do this and if you don’t have this access as the person who built the website. The code should near the end of the page, just before the final tag.
Once this is done, after a few days you should see the visitor data appearing in the Google Analytics reporting.
