Each tweet could be indexed by Google & give you a link back to your website
We all know inbound links to a website are a good thing, and generally the more of them you have the better (as long as they are of good quality).
Keep sending the tweets!
Anyone that spends time tweeting on Twitter will know they can have quite a number of tweets after a while. But it’s not quite so well known that Google may be indexing all of these tweets and if they contain a link back to your website, may well count as valuable backlinks.
How many of my Twitter pages are indexed by Google
You can find out how many of your Twitter pages Google has indexed by entering into the Google search box: http://twitter.com/YourTwitterUsername. This will show a list in Google of all sites that mention your Twitter username.
Many sites now run a Twitter widget and Google seems to record links from these back to your website. These can build up into very large numbers, quite quickly.

Interesting article! I just checked the BLs of my new recipe blog via Webmaster Tools. Seems that Google especially like Twitter status tweets 1) if they are retweeted, 2) are send via pinterest, 3) found via # on topsy.com, or 4) on sites with a twitterfeed widget.
I’ve got a question regarding twitter profile links
I have noticed that some twitter profiles has a backlink to a website but in my profile , my link is being converted to a t.co/…
Yes, as I understand it Twitter is now converting all links to their URL shortened version starting with t.co.. Some say that this reduces the value of the backlink, because it is going through a URL shortener. However I’ve found that these backlinks may be still off value especially as they are sometimes recorded by Google Webmaster Tools.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for finally writing about > Getting website backlinks from
Twitter < Loved it!
Hi there! I know this is somewhat off topic
but I was wondering if you knew where I could find a captcha plugin for my
comment form? I’m using the same blog platform as yours and I’m having problems finding one?
Thanks a lot!
Hi there,
I would use SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam for this. Also make sure you have Akismet set up as this should stop any spam that does get through. Obviously make sure everything is backed-up before you install any plugins.
Hope this helps.
David
Interesting – when I look at links to my site, there never seem to be many via twitter. Of the ones that do seem to link… no logic.
Will keep on twittering anyway!
This is great advice and something I haven’t considered before. Considering Twitter is PR10 then backlinks from the site are important.
Thanks for your comment.
Obviously it is hard to say how Google or the other search engines value links from Twitter, but even if you just consider the increased visibility the links give on Twitter I think it is worthwhile.
Just checking your site for the first time..seems there is good stuff around we could benefit with. Thanks for sharing, and this post’ info is useful too!
Well getting backlinks from Twitter is not a bad idea but I am not too sure whether these backlinks would add any value to your PR.
That’s a good point and is not something we’re going to know for sure. However activity on Twitter can lead to links from other websites and portals, which may add value.
Hi there, I found your blog by the use of Google even as looking for a related matter, your website came up, it appears to be like good. I’ve bookmarked to favourites|added to my bookmarks.
Just come across this – checked it out. Thanks for the heads up
Hi,
Out of interest I tried this on 2 accounts I look after. One got 4 results, from the strangest of tweeters and the other got none… Does it really work?
Hi Rosie,
Yes, sometimes you don’t get so many, but it does seem to show when others are linking back through Twitter. You can also leave off the link: bit, when entering the url in Google and you get every mention of your Twitter user name, not just back links. Yours came up with over 7000 mentions.
I post on twitter daily. my posts are usually articles I find online and then add the article to my twitter feed and i also add my website url to the post. However we are getting NO backlinks to our page at all from twitter. Is it because the Tweets are not original? I dont quite understand what I am doing wrong…
Hi there,
Thanks for your comment relating to you not getting backlinks from Twitter. I use Google Webmaster tools to see the ones from Twitter, but generally when I find them the website is posting out its own content using shortened urls, that get passed around Twitter and other social media sites and these create the backlinks. I think you may be right in that your tweets and links are not original. How this helps a bit.
I want to know how to get backlinks from Identica, your tutorial does not explain it, is there any update of the tutorials that you publish?
Hi Jesica,
Identi.ca is a micro-blogging platform based on the StatusNet free open source software and looks very interesting. It is also growing fast. I’m planning to write a review on it in the next few weeks.
hey there and thank you for your info – I have certainly picked up anything new from right here. I did however expertise several technical issues using this web site, as I experienced to reload the site a lot of times previous to I could get it to load properly. I had been wondering if your web hosting is OK? Not that I am complaining, but slow loading instances times will very frequently affect your placement in google and could damage your high-quality score if ads and marketing with Adwords. Well I am adding this RSS to my email and could look out for a lot more of your respective interesting content. Make sure you update this again very soon..

Hi Laurent and thank you for the comment.
There are a lot of arguments both ways on the “nofollow” tag which for those who are not fully familiar with meta tags, means in simple terms that the tag tells a search engine not to take much notice of the link in question.
My own take on this is that I think the search engine especially Google will follow any link it thinks is worth following regardless of the tag placed on it, and value it accordingly.
I have based this on evidence of search engine follows, especially when they find evidence the link could be of value.
Links on Twitter are on nofollow. They won’t count as backlinks.
Another micro-blogging plateform is on dofollow http://identi.ca
I agree that Links on Twitter are on nofollow, not counted by Google backlink. Thank you
