Also there is blogging, which can be a very successful marketing tool for business, that can be a very powerful tool when planning your social media marketing strategy.
Where do you start with a social media marketing strategy?
The big problem is where do you start? Which platform will most suit your business? And just how much benefit are you likely to get? The answer is to develop a simple social media marketing strategy to suit your type of business.
Not as difficult as it seems
This is not as difficult as it as first seems. You just need to ask a few questions about your business and go from there. Questions you might ask could include:
- What type of people am I looking to market too? If they are younger or you have a business to consumer products or services, then Facebook is an obvious choice. If it’s business to business then Linked In would be a good bet, as is Twitter, which now has a lot of smaller business activity using it.
- Are others in my industry using it and how? Take a look around at your competitors. Look at their websites. Are they using social media (links to their Twitter or Facebook pages)? Do they have a blog? In what way are they using social media marketing for their business? All this will help you get ideas for your own business marketing.
- Do I have the resources available? Actively using social media marketing can be very time consuming and needs a commitment of resources. You need to consider whether you have the time to do this or if you have someone in your company that could be assigned the task. However once you do get started; and if you are organised, it doesn’t need to take a great deal of time ongoing.
- A blog can be central to your social media marketing strategy. As I’ve outlined before if you maintain a blog that can be a big help with the social media websites. For instance the blog can be setup to automatically send snippets of postings to Facebook, Twitter and Linked In. Also you can maintain active communication with people using a blogs comments system.
So how do you go about developing a simple social media marketing strategy?
First thing to do is read the points about and see how they apply to you. The next thing is to get a piece of paper or a notepad and write down how you think it could help your business.
Profile your customers and website visitors
This could involved profiling your customers or website visitors, so you can identify which social media network work work best. Write a list of your competitors websites and then visit them and make some notes of how they are using them.
Write everything down
List your resources. How much time do you have. Is there someone you can pass this onto so they can help you? Could you outsource it and do you have the budget for this? Write all of this down with the answers.
Outline as simple bullets to start you strategy
Continue to make any further points you may think of and then once you’ve written everything down, read through it and outline some simple bullet points that can be the basis for your social media marketing strategy.

For automating tweets, I’ve been very happy with Buffer (bufferapp.com) a free Twitter tool. (soon to integrate with Facebook also)
It’s actually made a big difference to my activity on Twitter – I’ve increased my followers more quickly since I started using it. NB I have no affiliation with Buffer, I’m just a happy customer!
Hi Naomi,
Thanks for mentioning Buffer, I hadn’t heard of it before and it looks really useful. I’m going to give the free version a try.
Smart post. It’s great that one can write so good. In my opinion, communication with this topic hasn’t exactly been the greatest. I found you on Alta Vista.
