Lesson 2: Tweeting Strategies

Lesson 3: What to tweet about

Visit www.twitter.com and click on the big “Sign Up” button. This takes you to a page entitled “Joing the Conversation”, where you put your name, username, password and email.

Obviously this is all very simple and straightforward, but something that may be worth giving a little consideration is the choice of username.

There are many different schools of thought about developing a usernames to use with a Twitter account for business.

Some go for as close a match as possible to the business name. Others use a phrase associated with the product or service they offer. Still more will go for a shortened version or acronym or failing that their own name.

Offer an idea of what the business is about

In my experience it seems to be a good idea that the username can give visitors some idea of what the business is about. This is because it is one of the most visible parts of your relationship with Twitter and so if it can offer some clues about your business it will help people form ideas about you when their see it.

Change or no change

The other thing to remember is that you can change a username after you create your Twitter account, but I’m not sure it is a great idea to do so once you start using your Twitter account.

This is because like a domain name a Twitter username will be linked to, remembered and most importantly, be recorded in the search engines.

Changes are to some extent accommodated for, but in simple terms the less you can change it the better. So it does make sense to give this a little thought, before you start.

All you need to do now is click the “Create my account” button, making sure you’ve read and understood the Terms of Service.

In the next Lesson we’re going to look at fine-tuning the account setting as well as posting your first Tweet and which style of Tweeting will best suit your business.
