SEO Action Plan. Editing the Web Page Title Tag to Help Ranking

Budget Package Action Plan Editing the Web Page Title Tag to Help RankingIntroduction

The web page title tag won’t be visible to you but it is available to the search engines and they often display it on their results pages.

So in other words time spent editing the title tag is time very well spent because the finished result could be seen directly by searchers looking for your products or services.

Being ‘action based’ they are focused on specific tasks that’ll help drive your website’s ranking in the search engines, all with simple instructions and steps to follow.

More Budget Package Action Plans are being added all the time and you can learn more details about them here.

In this Action Plan I’m going to take you through writing an effective title tag that will help with page ranking and encourage people to click on the search result.

Benefits of completing this Action Plan

You’ll learn how to quickly edit the meta page title tag in a way that can contribute to a higher search engine ranking. Based on our own experience we mostly see an improvement in keyword and page ranking within 7 to 14 days (you can check your own website’s rankings at any time with the Weekly Reports).

How long will it take?

Completing the task will take around one hour. That should give you time to do 5 or 6 pages each taking around 10 minutes. For best results it’s best to do one session a week (obviously depending on how many pages your website has), this will allow for a gradual improvement in ranking over time.

Step 1: Locate the title tag in your website editor

First you need to log in to your websites editor and locate the place to edit the title tag. This is normally located in the same area where you edit the content for each page and will be identified as ‘SEO Title’ or ‘Meta Title’.

Step 2: How to write the title tag

Try and start writing the title tag with the target keyword phrase at the beginning. Google will notice this and so match it when people use that phrase in their searches. For example one client of ours sells solar powered gates that you can open with a mobile phone. So a logical start to the title tag would be ‘Solar Powered Gate Openers‘.

You have room for around 10 words in the title tag so besides the keyword phrase it’s good to get in a call to action phrase that will encourage people to click on the link on the search results page. Continuing with the solar gate page example, the second part of the title tag might be: ‘Easy to Open with Mobile Phone’. Take a look below at the screenshot from the content editor for the page:

As mentioned above we’ve found having a two-part title tag works best. So you’ll notice the second part of the title tag sentence is an eye catching call to action ‘Easy to Open with Mobile Phone’. This is something we know people find useful and so it will encourage them to click. Below is the actual title from the Google results page.

Other examples of short call to action phrases might be: “Increase Sales by 25%”, ‘10% Discount Today’ and ‘Proven Results Read Testimonials’, ‘Buy Online With Free Shipping’, or “Free Access Today”.

When people see these short call to action phrases among the other results they should drive more click through, resulting in more visitors and ultimately better search engine ranking.

Remember to keep an eye on title Length. 60 characters is the maximum. Any more will be truncated by the search engines.

Step 3: Review page rankings

As mentioned above ideally you need to work on several pages a week. This means after a week or so has elapsed it’s worth reviewing the ranking reports to see how things have improved. To do this you’ll need to login to the SheerSEO ranking software and then look at the weekly reports.

Step 4: Repeat Step 2 every week

To have the best chance of improving your website’s search engine rankings you’ll need to repeat Step 2 every week. This will help ensure the continual improvement in the page positions ongoing over time.
